He was a French painter and was noted for his pastoral scenes mythological scenes, whose work embodies the frivolity and sensuousness of the rococo style. In figure tapestries, the great name is Boucher.
Examples of his work are the paintings Triumph of Venus (1740, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) and Nude Lying on a Sofa (1752, Alte Pinakothek, Munich) and the tapestry series Loves of the Gods (1744). His facility with the brush, even when betraying the occasional superficiality of his art, enabled him to master every aspect of painting - history and mythology, portraiture, landscape, ordinary life and, as part of larger compositions, even still life.
