Tapestries are often associated with Medieval castles and royalty, and while some people may think of them as a “lost art” or ancient museum pieces, they are alive and well today. These elaborate wall hangings have been around since the 3rd century, adding splendor to rooms and drawing attention with their gorgeous details, and were most popular during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Creating tapestries was considered as high an art form as painting, sculpture, and architecture, and was well respected as a craft. Today’s tapestries are made with the same intricate attention to detail and still bring elegance and majesty to a room. They are popular with collectors, museums, and even the average admirer with a discerning eye. A wall hanigng is the perfect addition in any room to accent its design elements - from classics to landscapes, these magnificent forms of art would make any royal envious of the beautiful decor in your home.

Historically, tapestries served a variety of purposes and were primarily found in castles and churches. From a practical standpoint, they provided insulation in the chilly open areas and helped to soften the harsh noises often present in the larger chambers and gathering areas. Most notably, they were used to command high status and represented wealth amongst the high ranking members of society, and would be put on display for various celebrations and special occasions. Bringing such fine works of art into being came at a large price - a massive amount of wealth and power were required to make just one. Every tapestry was essentially custom made and seen as a long-term economic investment representing reign and status; they often depicted battles and conquests of glory, usually of the person who commissioned it. The labor was very intensive, often requiring several skilled workers, and could take as long as one month to produce just one square yard of tapestry. The church also used tapestries to display status and inspire awe, although the tapestries generally depicted intense scenes or important figures from biblical stories.

A more modern example of famous tapestries is the Quaker tapestry, created by Quaker Anne Wynn-Wilson. It has 77 panels that show the history of the Quakers from their origins in the seventeenth century up to the present day. Four thousand people from various countries helped to complete this tapestry from 1981-1989, and it can be found on display at the Friends Meeting House at Kendal, Cumbria, England. Replicas of some of the most famous wall hangings are popular with home collectors, and are a great way to add a flair of formal sophistication to a room. From Michelangelo to The Lady and the Unicorn, and so much more, you and your guests will love the vivid colors and fine detail a tapestry can bring to your home.
